1. Read a Book

Yes, it’s a classic — but daily reading is still one of the best ways to keep your kid’s brain active and growing all summer long. Out of fresh reads at home? Head to the library — in person or online. We’re lucky to have so many great local branches nearby: Oak Park, Malibu, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park — plus nearby spots in Simi Valley, Camarillo, Woodland Hills, Topanga, and Santa Monica.

Libraries aren’t just about books anymore — many offer DVDs, games, laptops, 3D printers, and even Wi-Fi hotspots you can borrow!

2. Plant a garden

Let your kids dig in the dirt and connect with nature. Plant some flowers and beautify your yard! Grow vegetables and herbs then use what you grow to cook something delish! For added fun start a worm and / or a compost bin - your kids will have a blast. Gardening and the planting process is a great way to explore science concepts.

As much as it would be nice to get our kids offline and unplugged - we just can't fight technology . . . so let's embrace it and utilize the many tools it offers. There are a ton of great learning websites and apps out there, most are completely free or they are free with paid options. Your kids think they are playing and watching fun videos while you can feel confident in knowing that there is some learning going on, too.

Here's a list of a few favorites:

Scratch - The world's largest free coding community for kids, the can create stories, games and animation to share. Note: This one of my kids favorites.
Code.org courses - Anyone can learn computer science courses and activities for free! It’s easier and way more fun than you ever thought.
Khan Academy - Free for learners and teachers - students practice at their own pace. Practice and lessons cover math K-12 through early college plus teaching grammar, science, history, AP®, SAT®, and more.
Read Write Think - A free resource for educators and parents to access the highest quality practices in reading and language arts instruction.
Funbrain - Created for kids in grades Pre-K through 8, offering games, books, comics, and videos that develop skills in math, reading, problem-solving and literacy all for free.
Starfall - A free site where children can learn reading and mathematics through exploration.
