Each year on September 11th we commemorate the anniversary of the events of 9/11. Here are local, virtual and at home options for your family to honor and remember the heroes and lives lost on 9/11.
Here are two local options for Conejo Valley - Malibu - Calabasas families to remember. The first is at Pepperdine in Malibu in Alumni Park along Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road where you can drive to and view the the Waves of Flags. This installation pays tribute to the 2,977 lives lost in the 9/11 terror attacks. Flags will be displayed from September 2–21, 2023 featuring 2,887 American flags for each American life lost and 90 international flags representing the home countries of those from abroad.
The Waves of Flags installation became a University tradition in 2008 when the Pepperdine College Republicans, inspired by a similar display, wanted to bring the tribute to the University.
The second 9/11 events in this area are where all local firehouses host a Remembrance Ceremony at the firehouses. It is a very short ceremony and very early in the morning.

Every year the 9/11 Memorial & Museum located in NYC has produced the annual 9/11 Tribute in Light event, to commemorate 9/11 and the lives lost, while honoring the heroism displayed by New Yorkers - watch the ceremony online. "We will never forget. and we recognize the profound meaning it has for so many New Yorkers.
About The 9/11 Memorial & Museum
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is the nonprofit organization that oversees operations for the 9/11 Memorial and 9/11 Memorial Museum. Located on eight of the 16 acres of the World Trade Center site, the Memorial and Museum commemorate the 2,977 people killed on 9/11 and to honor the spirit and resilience of New York City. The Memorial plaza design consists of two reflecting pools formed in the footprints of the original Twin Towers surrounded by swamp white oak trees. The Museum also explores the global impact of 9/11 and its continuing significance through education programs, public programs, live talks and film features that cover contemporary topics designed for diverse audiences.

Create Stars of Hope
Celebrate the rescue and recovery workers who persevered to recover the victims, clear Ground Zero, and enable the city to rebuild and renew - please take a moment to celebrate the brave individuals who heroically rose to the challenges that fateful day.
Each year the 9/11 Memorial & Museum hosts a Community Day together with the New York Says Thank You Foundation, they created Stars of HOPE—expressions of compassion and connection through creativity.
You are invited to create your own to share at home or online via social media - All you have to do is:
- Print out the Stars of HOPE paper template.
- Create your Star of HOPE using markers, crayons, pastels, chalks, and fun glittery stuff.
- If you don’t have a printer, you can still create a Star of Hope. Save the PDF below to your phone or desktop to “mark up,” or use a program like Paint or Photoshop. Or just draw your own!
- Post pictures of your Stars of HOPE on social media. Tag the museum on Instagram or Facebook @911Memorial or Twitter @Sept11Memorial.
- Use the tag #StarsofHope on Twitter and Instagram.
