By Brenna Gutell June 11, 2022

Summertime is here - well . . . unofficially, officially we have another week+. There is so much going on right now with the school year coming to a close and many celebrating not only last days of the school year but graduations and culminations plus there are the June holidays. Just around the corner is Juneteenth and Fathers Day - on the same day and Pride Celebrations happening all month long plus more.

June Holidays, Happening and Occasions to Celebrate with your Family

I know it's been a while since I've sent out a publisher's note, but I really just wanted to say "hi" and check in. Seems like this year has been extra busy and time just gets away - not sure where it's gone? You may or may not know - my oldest just finished his first year of High School, not so easy after being at home or going to school a combo of in-person and virtual, but he survived . . . more importantly I survived. Thinking back to this time last year the thought of having a High Schooler was a bit scary and intimidating, if I'm being honest. My youngest just culminated from the 5th grade and big ball of emotions. . . happy sad and somewhere in-between. Middle school this time is not such a biggie for me, my oldest already went through it for almost two years before the world came to an end - I know I'm being dramatic, sorry. BUT my baby is going to middle school and I'm worried . . .  that mama worry gene has kicked in - but somewhere I know he'll be fine. He's so excited about going, so I guess it's just me. I'm glad to see he's looking forward to his new adventure, not my experience the last go-around.  As much as part of me is ready to leave elementary school behind, it's bitter-sweet because - I will miss it a lot. If you didn't already know I was a very active volunteer, pre-world the world crashing to a halt. I was on campus so much you would have thought I worked there - between volunteering, fundraising and PTA stuff it kept me busy. I knew everybody - the staff, the teachers, the parents and many of the kids - that's what I'm going to miss big time - the sense of community! Wish me luck moving on to our next chapters - change is hard and for some of us more than others.

So if you haven't noticed events and activities are still a bit wonky, while thing opened up long ago and restrictions have eased or gone away to some extent, I'm finding many events are not finalized or shared until the last minute, so for this reason make sure you visit the Macaroni KID Conejo Valley - Malibu - Calabasas event calendar regularly. Often times I find out about great events after the newsletter has been sent, and add them after the fact. Also check the venue to make sure everything is good to go before heading out the door, I'm still seeing last minute cancelation - also know that many events are requiring reservations - even the free ones. I do my best to include as much information as possible, thank you for understanding.

Heat Alert

Just in case you are not aware some of our local areas are going to be pretty hot this weekend - or so the alerts popping-up on my phone have warned - over and over!

Please stay safe and keep cool this weekend - I know I don't have to say this, but please don't leave kids, pets or even the elderly in a hot car for even a few minutes - they heat up quickly even with windows down. If you don't have A/C or if it's not doing the job there are lots of place you can go for some relief. Locally you could head out an indoor mall like the Oak, but you might not be the only one. One of my favs is to head to the movies, it's always so freezing in there anyways. The beaches are a great option or one of our local splash parks, the closest is Oak Park and Simi Valley.
