Every four years, Washington DC hosts a big celebration to welcome a new president. According to the 20th Amendment, a president's term begins at noon EST on January 20 — unless it falls on a Sunday, in which case the date is moved to January 21. It’s a great time to talk with your kids about democracy, leadership, and the peaceful transfer of power!
This event is typically held at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington DC, though weather or security precautions may lead to changes in location.
What Happens During the Presidential Inauguration?
Inauguration Day is filled with traditions that symbolize the beginning of a new presidential term. The swearing-in ceremony is held at the U.S. Capitol, though weather and security concerns can sometimes lead to adjustments. This day includes the Oath of Office, an inaugural address by the president, and often a range of celebrations to mark the occasion.
The Oath of Office
The vice president-elect is sworn in first, using the same oath that has been taken by all senators, representatives and federal employees since 1884. Then, the president-elect recites the following oath as required by the U.S. Constitution:
"I do solemnly swear — or affirm — that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
This moment officially marks the beginning of a new presidency.
Behind the Scenes: White House Moving Day
While the ceremony is taking place, staff at the White House are hard at work. Starting early in the morning, teams prepare to move out the belongings of the outgoing president and bring in personal items for the incoming president and their family. This includes cleaning, painting, and swapping furniture and decorations to reflect the new family’s preferences. The entire process is coordinated down to the minute to ensure a seamless transition.
