Wednesday, December 29
Sensational Story Time (11 AM & 2 PM): “Li’l Rabbit’s Kwanzaa” > Inspired by Brer Rabbit, a trickster character from the African-American folklore tradition, the story of Li’l Rabbit captures the true meaning of Kwanzaa—coming together to help others.
Thursday, December 30
Sensational Story Time (11 AM & 2 PM): “My First Kwanzaa” > This story written by Karen Katz is a warm and lively introduction to a special holiday that will help even the youngest child to understand and join in the festivities of Kwanza. A Kinara activity will follow this storytime.
Friday, December 31
Sensational Story Time (11 AM & 2 PM): “Kevin’s Kwanzaa” > This story written by Lisa Bullard follows Kevin and his family as they celebrate the seven days of Kwanza. They light candles, learn special words, and talk about the importance of working together. A Kwanzaa Unity Cup activity will follow this storytime.
Grown-up Tip: If you don’t celebrate Kwanzaa in your home, take a trip to the Pretend City Library or even your local library to pick up stories about the holiday. While you read, make connections to details that relate to your own familiar celebrations, and discuss what’s different. It’s a wonderful time to talk about the similarities and differences of those around you. It’s what makes our community so special and unique!
