5. It's all about YOU!

National Parents Day is July 24, it's the one day a year it's not about the kids, it's about YOU! If you're a parent or caregiver parenting a child, this is the day for you! Put your feet up, close your eyes and let the kids bring you snacks for a change.

6. Say goodbye to plastics!

"Choose to Refuse" just one single-use plastic this Plastic Free July! The top four most prolific single-use plastics are: bags, water bottles, to-go coffee cups and straws. Let take this challenge to heart and think about all the ways we can reduce single-use plastic in our daily lives! If this idea is new to your family or you're not sure where to begin, pick one thing to start with . . . then another - before you know you will have successfully reduced your family's consumption of single-use plastic - just like that! Ask your kids - I bet they have some great ideas for ways to reduce plastic, kids are smart like that?

Some things your family can do:

  • Bring your own bags, reuse bags you already have or get some more sturdy "reusable" bags," keep them in your car so they are ready to go
  • "Just say No" to all plastic bags, or ask for paper if you didn't bring your own - especially if you are just buying one or two items skip the bag, I either carry it or if it's small put it in my purse, larger items don't need a bag at all
  • When getting food items to-go if you plan to it home let them know you don't need utensils
  • Coffee or hot drinks on the go? Bring your own reusable insulated mug
  • Ditch those disposable plastic water bottles and swap for a reusable bottle instead - I prefer the insulated ones they keep drinks cold even when it's hot out
  • Get your kids in on the action too - send your kids to school and camp with reusable water bottles, you can even add ice for those extra hot days
  • Get some reusable straws for home, I like the metal one with a slight bend - some even come with a cleaning brush
  • When out and about bring your own reusable utensils and straws with you
  • Pack snacks and lunch in reusable containers instead of plastic baggies - if you are sending them to school be sure and label them
  • At the store choose glass, metal or paper containers as alternatives to plastic when available
  • Beyond your home - ask your schools, workplace and businesses to reduce their use or find alternatives to single-use plastics

The video below inspired me to take a hard look at the choices I make every time I shop. One thing that really stuck with me is that "plastic is forever."

Looking for someplace cool where the kids can play inside while you relax and visit with your friends?
