Family Fun ways to Celebrate National Ice Cream Month in July


Local Places to find Yummy frozen treats in Agoura Hills, Oak Park, Malibu, Calabasas, Thousand Oak, Newbury Park, Westlake Village and nearby in Ventura and Los Angeles counties:

Tifa Chocolate & Gelato: This company is locally owned with franchise locations, it's one of my family's favorites, in addition to handcrafted gelato, they have super yummy cookies and other sweet treats, fine chocolate plus coffee and tea. Stop by with your family, they will not be disappointed, the hardest part is choosing which flavor as they have so many. 

Hours: Many of the locations are open 10am-10pm most days and some are open till 11pm Friday and Saturday. Check individual locations for hours.

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Shop:  Known to many as "31 Flavors", although they have way more now - I counted. Another family favorite, they have all the classic flavors plus some unique and unusual ones - keep your eye out for the limited flavors of the month. One of my fav Baskin Robbins creations is their ice cream cakes - they've helped my family celebrate many occasions. My kids love the clown cones and Polar Pizza, my fav is hot fudge sundae, milkshakes too! My all-time fav flavor is peanut butter n' chocolate. Did you know that all BR shops are locally owned franchises? You can also find pre-packs at some local grocery stores.

Leone's Original Italian Ices:  The Italian Ice King of California! They offer "water ices" and "crème ices" plus hot and cold drinks including coffee and hot chocolate. If you are a coffee lover like me you must try the Affogato! I will mention that this another family fav, but they have soooo many flavors it's hard to choose. This one of a kind business is owned and operated by a local family. They are typically opened later during the summertime, check the hours before heading out.

Little Calf Creamery:  Artisan ice cream and sorbet made fresh daily plus custom cakes and mud pies, yum! The Thousand Oaks location offers a full menu of ice creams plus meals from the Café including burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and items just for kids. The Westlake location offers a menu of ice creams and fresh baked desserts only. Locally owned an operated.

Malibu Yogurt & Ice Cream: I haven't been a while, but this one is most definitely a winner with kids and I. Everything is super yummy and there is plenty of outdoor seating around the fountain. One of a kind, local owned treasure.

  • Malibu - 23755 Malibu Rd Ste 600

Le Café De La Plage:  Not just ice cream, they have a full menu of food items and coffee that look amazing. While I have not been yet it's on my bucket list. Keep your eye out sometimes you will find their pre-packaged ice cream in the freezer at your local grocery store. Those I have had and they are delish, just don't ask me to pick a flavor.

Cold Stone Creamery:  Freshly made in the store, you chose your mix-ins and end up with a custom creation. They also offer an assortment of frozen drinks and custom cakes. Nationwide locations / local owned franchises.

  • Thousand Oaks - 215-A N. Moorpark Road inside the Janss Marketplace

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream:  Fresh homemade ice cream using original methods and recipes in-store daily since 1945 in multiple franchise locations across the country.

  • Calabasas - 23369 Mulholland Drive in the El Camino Shopping Center, next to Health Nut

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams: Just Ice cream, but very creamy, in unique and unusual flavors. You can get it by the scoop or by the pint, you might even find pre-packs at your local grocery store. This famous national brand you might have heard of in the news has several "scoop shops" all over Los Angeles, but only one in our backyard.

Coaches Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor:  I have not been, but have been meaning to go, this place looks amazing. They offer super premium ice cream, shakes, malts, sundaes, sorbets, soy cream plus cookies and brownies. From their Facebook page: "Local Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. Owned by Conejo Valley Locals, Real Seats From Angel and Dodger Stadium."

Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard of Newbury Park: Rita's Ice Custard happiness offers frozen custard, Italian Ice, milkshakes, frozen drinks and custom frozen creations! I look my boys and it was pretty tasty.

  • Located inside  - Chevron ExtraMile at 2290 Borchard Road, Newbury Park

Thrifty hand scooped Ice Cream counters located inside Rite Aid:  Although Thrifty Drug is long gone this 80+ year old California classic is still here. You can get scoops at your local Rite Aid or pick up pre-packs to-go in up to 52 flavors. If you grew up in California you probably have fond memories of getting ice cream cones at Thrifty. Located all over.

Frozen Yogurt

Yogurtland:  Self-serve Frozen Yogurt, this is a national brand with locations all over, many are local owned franchises and offer fundraising opportunities.

Yozen Frogurt: Made fresh, everyday, and contains both live and active cultures. Locally owned frozen yogurt shop.

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt:   Frozen yogurt made with fresh milk, the entire line of frozen products are certified Kosher offering gluten-free and vegan treat options too. You pay by weight not by topping. Plus fundraising options

  • Thousand Oaks - 168 W. Hillcrest Dr. #1, on the 2nd level in the outdoor area of The Oaks Shopping Center next to the AMC Movie Theater.

Wild Cherry:  Offering Frozen Yogurt, Smoothies and Boba drinks.

Malibu Yogurt & Ice Cream: In addition to Ice Cream they also offer soft serve frozen yogurt,  there is plenty of outdoor seating around the fountain to enjoy your fro-yo. One of a kind, local owned treasure.

Pinkberry Vending Machine:  Known for their tart frozen yogurt. The Pinkberry vending machine is located inside the Oaks Shopping center in Thousand Oaks, downstairs in the JCPenny court between the elevator and the kids play area.

Sunlife Organics: It's not just a juice bar, they also have smoothies and smoothie bowls with multiple locations.

Matcha Boba: This premier bubble tea shop is also a café that makes pastries in-house. They serves Boba smoothies, bubble tea, Boba tea, milk tea and iced coffee.

Café Sapientia:  The only local place I know where you can Snow Crème - Korean shaved ice. This is amazing café is owned and operated by a local family, it's another of family's favorites. They have many offerings including highest quality single origin-based coffee, specialty teas, unique drinks, pastries, sandwiches, soups and of course the Snow Crème. We love to stop by for a snack, lunch, sweet treat or some of the best coffee / espresso in town. My personal fav is the strawberry Snow Crème, but my kids like Oreo, they like to swap the chocolate snow cream for the original that way it's not too sweet. Please note they are closed on Tuesdays, some holidays and some days during holiday breaks.

Honey Cup Coffeehouse & Creamery: This local coffee shop has two locations offering more than pastries and breakfast they also have homemade ice cream. I haven't had the chance to visit this newer location, but I it's on my list.

Carrara Pastries: Offering homemade Italian desserts, gelato and coffee at three locations.

Conejo Coffee:  Fresh and local offering coffee, food, smoothies and gelato.

  • Newbury Park - 2860 Camino Dos Rios

JOi Café:  Stop by this local organic, plant based, gluten free eatery next time you're looking for a smoothie.

  • Westlake Village:  2855 Agoura Road

Tarantula Hill Brewing Co.: Go for the food and brews and treat your family to some ice cream - all made in-house. Head to the ice cream bar and you'll also find vegan options.

The Raspado House:  From Yelp: "We offer authentic Mexican shaved ice, street corn on the cob, fresh fruit smoothies, and traditional Mexican snacks! You'll be sure to love our home made house flavors!" I have not been to this local dessert shop, but the photos on their Instagram page look amazing.

Foster's Donuts:  This tasty local donuts shop is open later, but if you didn't already know they also sell ice cream.

 Nick the Greek:  In addition to Greek food they offer Greek Frozen Yogurt with an option of adding Baklava for dessert.

  • Located in Westlake Village - 3955B E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.- Across from the Auto Mall next to BJ's.

Emil's Bakehouse:  In addition to a variety of pastries, cakes, bread, quiche, cookies and other items including coffee they also offer Pinkberry soft serve frozen yogurt.

Ice Cream Scoop Shops

Tang & Java - Gelato & Coffee:  In-house chef created gelato from the highest quality, freshest ingredients - nothing artificial. Serving specialty coffees from locally roasted coffee beans. Be sure to try the Poffertjes, they are traditional small and fluffy Dutch treats. They also have a selection of other sweet treats, specialty drinks and smoothies. I stumbled upon this place and it's become a family fav, everything we've had from the Poffertjes to the coffee and gelato has left us wanting more. Please note: the parking lot is small, if you don't get lucky finding a space you can look for a spot on the street.

McConnell's Fine Ice Creams: Only using simple ingredients, started in Santa Barbara with several scoop shops and pre-packs available in your grocery store. This is one of our favorites.  

  • Locations in:  Ventura | Santa Barbara 2-locations | Studio City | Pacific Palisades | Third Street Promenade - Santa Monica | Downtown L.A.

Sweet Rose Creamery:  They make everything from scratch, using ingredients from local, organic and regenerative farmers. You can also find pre-packs in some local grocery stores. I haven't been, but I've had their delicious pre-packs.

Rori’s Artisanal Creamery:  While I haven't been to their scoop shops, I buy the pre-packs all the time - my son loves Fresh Mint Patty.

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream:  Nationwide franchises making fresh ice cream onsite daily. I spotted this gem last time I was in Northridge, I haven't had the chance to try it yet. 

Wanderlust Creamery:  Artisanal ice cream inspired by travel® with Multiple SoCal locations offering seasonal and signature flavors. 

Mashti Malone's Exotic Ice Creams:  Visit the iconic shop that takes ice cream on a flavorful journey from the traditional to the exotic. Made with fresh and natural ingredients and colorings with lots of dairy and gluten-free options. I have not been, but it's been on my bucket list for a while.

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream -  Simi Valley:  A very unique and fun way to have your ice cream. Although I've never been to their shop in-person, they have attended many STEAM events at my kids' school to show off their science and serve their yummy treats - you will not be disappointed. The have franchises nationwide and we are lucky to have one nearby.


Soft Serve Ice Cream

Mister Softee Store: You probably know their truck, but now they have two local stores. The Camarillo location is a one-of-a-kind creation; a throwback ice cream parlor that gives a nod to the history of Mister Softee, and brings back some qualities of ice cream parlors of old with ample seating. The Ventura location is open now, and awaiting a retrofit to the front entrance that will make it open air.

Magpies Softserve:  Chef inspired, scratch made softserve ice cream and toppings and softserve pies with vegan options with three locations.

  • Mobile - let them come to you with their smooth, silky Italian Ice made with natural fruit juice blends that are delicious and healthier. We've sampled this tasty frozen treat at many school events and fundraisers. 

Mister Softee of Southern California

  • Offering softserve ice cream treats, this food truck is a familiar site at local events and fundraisers. Their specialty is softserve in cups or cones, dipped plus toppings and sundae options, shakes and more.
